Proprietary chemical anti-leak compounds are usually quite effective in curing small leakages. One sometimes sees the use of such substances as flour, porridge or mustard recommended: but while these may sometimes be effective and must be used in a real emergency, the very real risk of blocking the small passages in the radiator, necessi¬tating the fitting of a new radiator film block, cannot be overlooked. A further point is that even a first-class proprietary anti-leak compound will not be effective if it builds-up on top of deposits of scale or rust; the most satisfactory course, therefore, is thoroughly to flush-out and descale the system, as described on pages 46-7, before using one of these compounds.
